When Uranus moved into Gemini earlier this year, I was pointedly reminded of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and the destructive, awe-inspiring power of brilliant, egotistical genius. A young scientist, thirsting for the secret of life, animates dead flesh with Promethean finesse and a ‘spark’ of electricity—only to create a monstrous, blighted creature, a seeming tabula rasa that quickly succumbs to moral affections in the destruction of its maker. Enter Uranian myth and imagery: defying genesis, begetting radical novelty, dismantling the known, and experimenting with the impossible. Uranus, God of the Sky, asks no one, halts nowhere, fears nothing: he electrifies the dead, unsettles the living, and with his ingress into mutable air sign Gemini (think duality and differentiation) incites contraries with such equal force and advocacy that the present appears alternately poised for explosive regression or a quantum leap forward. “Invention”, Frankenstein reads, “does not consist in creating out of void, but out of chaos.”
The Uranus Transit
As the higher octave of Mercury, Uranus’s effects, experientially speaking, take centre stage within the faculty of mind. Uranus is never interested in the personal: he radically exposes our outdated ideational fixations, expunges the linear narratives upholding our illusion of a continuous self, and catapults us, with the delicacy of a steam-locomotive, into a transpersonal void where only the impossible is possible. To hazard he responds with alacritous enthusiasm, to opposition with ferocious defiance—a Uranus transit is a raucous escapade, a beautifully violent insurrection of all the freedoms we have previously denied ourselves. It rewires our neural pathways, recalibrates our emotional programming, and encodes our automated behaviours with entropy and chaos; any attempts to return to old habits short-circuit as we are permanently altered in our habitual functioning to seek total novelty.
