Hello Neptune in Aries. You’re the warrior towering above a cloud-streaked sky, commanding a horizon of razor-sharp crags piercing through wreaths of mist. You evoke the sublime like a sunlit forest path, a veiled Virgin Mary, a slowly melting snowflake. And you remind me of Caspar David Friedrich’s ‘Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog’ — one of my favourite paintings of German romanticism (no oxymoron, I assure you) and a homage to the beautifully fissured sandstone stretches of my home, ‘Saxon Switzerland’. To my knowledge, Friedrich was not affiliated with astrology, but he sums up a Neptune ingress pretty neatly:
“When a region cloaks itself in mist, it appears larger and more sublime, elevating the imagination, and rousing the expectations like a veiled girl”
A Date with the Ghost of Time
What is a Neptune transit, you ask? It is the soft embrace of a powerful person, dissolving each hardened sentiment, each sedimented memory through purity of being and grace alone. It strips you, tenderly, of your deepest convictions, washing away the dust of time to summon your truest form. And it is an embrace you must surrender to willingly — or your bones will be crushed under its weight. Collectively, Neptune transits reflect the cultural trends, global emotional currents and popular visions that currently preoccupy humanity’s imagination. A creative force to be reckoned with, they are not an immediate conquest of the tangible — they seep into the collective consciousness more subtly, surfacing in the current Zeitgeist (culture, art, film, literature, and the music industry), only to ripple out into our socio-political reality and seize us with the gravitational pull of a riptide. And it makes sense if you think about it: our popular imagination not only reflects, but also shapes and co-creates social and political outcomes. The repeated envisioning, affirmation and enactment of a group’s beliefs create its collective social truth. Neptune, we do well to remember, is the transmission of truth and illusion: a seductive force first, a ruthless revelation second, it holds us accountable for what we have birthed into the world. Supreme care, therefore, is necessary with this powerful God: we must pre-emptively discipline the mind, we must carefully discriminate between fact and fallacy, and, above all, we must devotedly envision only the sacred.
